Visiting campus
If you are a member of the news media and you are planning a visit to the Caltech campus, and you need information about finding a specific campus location, arranging parking for a vehicle, or making special arrangements for filming, please see the following information.
Campus map: For help finding a campus location, view our interactive map.
Campus parking: Parking is available in several campus lots and parking structures. There are two parking structures on Wilson Avenue: North Wilson and South Wilson. There are also parking structures on Holliston Avenue and California Boulevard. Additional parking lots are marked in gray on the interactive campus map. To park on campus, you will need a parking pass, which can be obtained for free by contacting Emily Velasco or Robert Perkins at [email protected] or [email protected], respectively. The media parking pass allows you to park in any parking spot other than those designated for a special purpose, such as named spots belonging to faculty members, EV charging, etc. Time-limited parking is also available in areas along neighboring streets.
If you have a news van or other large equipment vehicle and you would like to bring it into the interior of the campus for filming, please reach out to Emily Velasco or Robert Perkins to make arrangements.
Campus security: Caltech's campus is generally considered open to the public, but because it is a private school, its grounds are patrolled by Caltech security officers. If you are filming or otherwise conducting interviews on campus, security may approach you to assess your purpose for being there. Commercial filming requires a permit, but filming by the news media does not. If you are member of the news media planning to visit campus, please contact the media relations office prior to your arrival and we will let the security team know to expect your presence.
If you are planning to film for commercial purposes on the Caltech campus, you are required to have a filming permit. For more information about commercial filming, contact Janna Gould.
Earthquakes and the Caltech Seismo Lab: If you are visiting campus to report on an earthquake or to visit the Seismology Lab, click here.
Documentaries: If you are filming for a documentary on campus, please contact Emily Velasco to make arrangements before coming to campus. Documentary crews will need to sign a documentary filming agreement, and are required to have insurance. If you would like more information about campus locations that are available for filming documentary interviews, please see our campus filming page.
