Bicycle thefts have surged on campus and at off-campus student housing in recent weeks, with the perpetrators posing as scrap metal scavengers and going so far as to remove entire bike racks.
Caltech Campus Security officials advise members of the Caltech community to take extra precautions when securing their bikes, such as using a U-lock outside or keeping bikes inside residences if possible. In addition, packages and other deliveries should not be left unattended.
To report a concern, call Campus Security at ext. 5000 from any on-campus phone, or 626-395-5000 from off campus.

Here, rectangular patches on the concrete show where the center rack has been unfastened and removed, along with the bikes locked to it.
