On Saturday, November 6, nearly 200 parents and family members of new students got a small taste of Techer life at New Students Parents Day.
The day-long event began with a panel discussion, "Life at Caltech," in which upperclassmen Theresa Juarez and Dongkook Lim, along with Joe Shepherd, Dean of Graduate Studies and the C. L. "Kelly" Johnson Professor of Aeronautics and professor of mechanical engineering, and Dean of Undergraduate Studies Barbara Green, shared their perspectives. Anneila Sargent, Vice President for Student Affairs and professor of astronomy presided over lunch at the Athenaeum, where President Jean-Lou spoke to an appreciative audience and the Caltech Glee Clubs provided after-lunch entertainment.
In the afternoon, a panel of faculty presented information on the Freshman Core Curriculum and the staff of the Student Affairs office led special sessions on financial aid, study abroad, and career development. The new students later joined their families for refreshments in the Avery Courtyard and a peformance by Caltech's co-ed a capella singing group, Fluid Dynamics. The program ended with tours of the campus.
