- Public Event
The Caltech Jazz Bands, directed by Barb Catlin, present their 14th Annual Jazz Festival featuring the Caltech Monday Night Jazz Ensemble directed by Barb Catlin. Also on the program is the Nick Broten Group, Pasadena City College Jazz ensemble directed by Andrea Baker Wilkerson and Lounge-O-Rama.
This event will take place on Saturday, April 26th from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm at Gates Annex Patio on the Caltech campus. Gates Patio is located just west of Dabney Lounge.
The Caltech Monday Night Jazz Band, directed by Barb Catlin, will open the festival with upbeat selections from swing to contemporary; Count Basie to Pat Metheny. This group of Caltech students and community from JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) has been thrilling audiences for more than 35 years!
Caltech graduate and tenor saxophonist, Nick Broten, will bring his quartet for an introspective and swinging set of small group jazz. Nick is a rising star on the Los Angeles jazz scene and is not to be missed! Hear eclectic and energetic improvised music featuring original compositions from graduates of Caltech, USC, and CalArts.
The Pasadena City College Jazz Ensemble, directed by Andrea Baker, has performed for the Playboy Jazz festival, the L.A. Jazz Institute, and many other venues. The band has recorded five CDs to date, many of which receive airplay on KJZZ. The PCC Jazz Band has shared the stage with nationally recognized artists and clinicians, such as Gordon Goodwin and the Big Phat Band, Kris Berg, Steve Wilkerson, and Ira Nepus.
Lounge-O-Rama will take audiences on a musical journey through time from jazz, blues, soul, and maybe just a bit of rock-n-roll. Founded in 2003 by trumpeter/vocalist and Caltech Jazz Band member, Patrick Olguin, this group features a front line known as the Sax Divas, five lead vocalists, a shredding lead guitarist, and a hard swinging horn section. They play from the books of Hoagy Carmichael, Cole Porter, Elvis, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and the Black Crows- all in a single night! Don't miss this wildly entertaining and versatile group.
Admission is free and no tickets are required. Some seating will be provided and audience members are welcome to bring food and blankets for a picnic on the lawn.
