Launch of the Linde Center BioPolicy Initiative
Advancements in the biological sciences have been a driving force for much of humanity's progress for over a century. LCSSP's new BioPolicy Initiative builds on this legacy, drawing connections between contemporary public policy conversations and Caltech's longstanding expertise in fields like microbiology, genomics, ecology, biochemistry, and bioengineering.
Please join us to celebrate the launch of this important work, which has been made possible by the incredible generosity of Eric and Wendy Schmidt and Ronald and Maxine Linde. Keynote remarks will be delivered by Hoover Institution Science Fellow Drew Endy, with a reception to follow in Dabney Garden.
"Biology as a Cultural, Political, & Strategic Domain"
The physics of flourishing are good. Unlocking biology as a general purpose technology is essential to make real flourishing. Yet we remain constrained by scarcity regimes. Progress is not being made real soon enough to matter. Last century's politics of science — the Endless Frontier — has run aground. Last century's politics of economy — free markets guarantee free people — has proven less than 100% correct. By what narratives will people organize themselves toward positive futures held in common? The students and scholars of Caltech have never been more needed. Not only as scientists and engineers but as dreamers, storytellers, and leaders. Only by cultural, political, and strategic action will ten billion Homo sapiens realize good lives in partnership with the planet.
