Brian Greene: Icaraus at the Edge of Time - Presentation & Book Signing
- Public Event
Presented By: | Caltech Committee on Institute Programs |
The last hundred years have witnessed a panorama of stunning scientific discoveries, and among the most mind-blowing of all are black holes: regions of space threaded by such powerful gravity that anything venturing too close is unable to escape. Time itself is so thoroughly warped by black holes that it appears to stop at a black hole's edge. In his new book, Icarus at the Edge of Time, Brian Greene has woven these scientific insights into a futuristic re-imagining of the traditional Icarus myth, a fable about fathers and sons, curiosity and wisdom, and the complexity of the universe as only a physicist of his range and lucidity could. Designed by Chip Kiddwith full-color images from the Hubble Space Telescopeit is destined to be a classic for all ages.
Greene will discuss his new book, as well as the importance of storytelling in science while providing a visual tour through the history and cutting-edge thinking about black hole physics. This event is perfect for all of those interested in science ages 10 and up.
One of America's leading physicists and a New York Times best-selling author, Brian Greene has also written The Elegant Universe and The Fabric of the Cosmos. He was educated at Harvard University and at Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. In 1996, he joined Columbia University as a professor of physics and mathematics. He has lectured at both a general and a technical level around the world and is internationally acknowledged for a number of groundbreaking discoveries in superstring theory.
