Bhargava's geometry-of-numbers beyond Davenport's lemma
Artane Siad,
Assistant Professor,
Yau Mathematical Sciences Center,
Tsinghua University,
The goal of this talk will be to present a twist on Bhargava's averaging method that extends it to a class of non-Euclidean spaces. After reviewing Davenport's lemma, I will explain this twist by describing a proof of the infinitude of cubic fields with class groups of exact 2-rank 1 via dynamics. I will then touch on a second application of this circle of ideas resolving a puzzle, first picked up in the 1970s, in class number 1 statistics of pure cubic fields. Based on joint work with Shankar-Swaminathan and Shnidman.
