Country Joe McDonald: Performing his Tribute to Woody Guthrie
- Public Event
Presented By: Caltech Folk Music Society
Country Joe McDonald's music is certainly not country music in the popular sense, and yes, this is the fellow who, with his band, Country Joe and the Fish, almost personified the '60s, Woodstock and the anti-war movement with the song Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die, along with the famous Fish cheer (Give me an F...).
But there's a lot more to this man. He recorded an album of Woody Guthrie songs back in 1969, at a time when Woody's music was not highly visible, long before today's popular recognition of Woody's legacy. It turns out that Joe's dad had a lot in common with Woody and his Oklahoma Dut Bowl roots. Joe himself feels a kinship with Woody's music and politics, and he has combed through his writings and notes, becoming quite a scholar on Woody.
