Splitting spheres and barbells
Alison Tatsuoka,
PhD Student,
Department of Mathematics,
Princeton University,
In 2019, Budney and Gabai introduced barbell diffeomorphisms of four-manifolds. We will review their construction, and use it to show the existence of infinitely many splitting 3-spheres for two unknotted, unlinked 2-spheres in S^4. Time permitting, we will also discuss some joint work in progress with Seungwon Kim and Gheehyun Nahm, where we use barbells to construct more codimension-1 linking and knotting in S^4.
