Numerous engineering expedients have historically architected weaknesses in our moving image infrastructure (e.g. "television").  Although current digital television and movie technology is partly robust, it is also partly weak.  Further, display technology has had a strong advancement curve, similar to Gordon Moore's law, but with fits and starts.  There is an imperative to begin to architect for heterogeneous display capabilities, as a replacement for the current model of a single picture definition that may not match what is actually seen.  By thinking about current limiting image system elements, such as compression codecs, and then engineering them to anticipate rapid display capability advances, it is possible to conceive of a better way of doing things.  A visual demonstration will help to show some of this potential.
