Lahari: A Dance Concert: In Aid of the Tsunami Victims
Beckman Auditorium
- Public Event
The event, sponsored by the Caltech Tsunami Relief Effort, will feature performances by:
- Arpana Dance Company
- Arpana Dance Company has had the honor of performing in the US, Europe and India under the guidance of Ramya Harishankar, a renowned performer, teacher, and choreographer who combines elegance, grace and suppleness to express all shades of emotion with sensitivity and intuition. The company performs in the classical dance traditions Bharata Natyam, a complex synthesis of the arts, literature, poetry, sculpture and music with origins dating back 2000 years.
- Shakti Dance Company
- A virtuoso in this ancient classical dance form, artistic director Viji Prakash is an internationally acclaimed dancer, choreographer, and teacher of Bharata Natyam. Her dynamic stage presence, her rhythmic command over the complex foot patterns and striking facial expressions bring to life the beauty and grandeur of this art form. The company includes more than 20 dancers, musicians and technical staff.
- Ramaa and Shweta Bharadvaj
- Ramaa Bharadvaj has come to be regarded not only as a distinguished dancer, teacher and choreographer, but also a writer and dance activist of distinction. LA Times dance critic Sasha Anawalt wrote, "She was stunning, truly the most beguiling, evocative and articulate Indian dancer of real stature I had ever seen in Los Angeles. She possesses the divine." Swetha Bharadvaj, Ramaa's daughter and student, is an accomplished performer of both the Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi dance styles. Swetha gave her first performance in Madras, India, when she was only 4, and was hailed as a child prodigy by the press.
Lahari is a Sanskrit word meaning "large wave." Our event is part of the large wave of response seen around the world following the December 26th earthquake and subsequent tsunamis in the Indian Ocean.
Money from ticket sales will be donated to Asha for Education, UNICEF, and Architecture for Humanity for reconstruction work in areas affected by the tsunami.
We hope you can join us.
