University teaching is often thought only to happen in the lecture room, while other duties like holding office hours and grading are seen as mostly administrative or extra and thus rarely given as much thought. In reality, a large part of student learning comes from correcting misconceptions, which are best done during office hours and when receiving feedback from formative assessments. In this interactive talk, we will discuss how to effectively handle these crucial, yet often ignored, elements of university teaching. In particular, we will cover how to effectively guide student learning via prompting questions during individual office hour interactions, as well as how to give targeted feedback while grading using effective rubrics.
