Nitinol: from Magic to Saving Lives
Tom Duerig,
Nitinol Devices and Components, Inc.,
Most engineers are now familiar with Nitinol and its shape memory effect, but few are familiar with its half-century journey from an accidental discovery to its prominent position as a medical device material. This discussion will retrace that path, highlighting the many, almost comic missteps that engineers and businessmen have taken along the way. Finally, it will review the seemingly ideal fit of Nitinol with today's trends for smaller and less invasive medical devices.
