Characterization of Soft Tissue Surrogates and Brain Tissue for Development
Ghatu Subhash, Knox T. Millsaps Professor, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, University of Florida,
Gelatin and its compounds are commonly used as soft-tissue surrogates in reconstructive surgery. Gelatin constructs are also are potential candidates for scaffolds in brain tissue regeneration and growth. However, the increased attention in recent years to blast-induced mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) due to the ongoing military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, has shifted the emphasis to identification of high strain rate properties of brain tissue and its surrogates. Refreshments will be provided at 10:45 a.m. in 210 Thomas.
