"Body-Brain Interoception: Consider the Lung as a Sensory Organ"
Interoception, a term coined by Sir Charles Sherrington in 1906, defines the "sensation from the interior of the body". The lung, given its large surface area and constant exposure to aerosol and mechanical inputs, is an ideal setting to study interception. I will discuss how we entered the field of Interoception by following an accidental finding, and now consider the lung not just as a gas exchange organ, but also a sensory organ.
