TecherTalk: APhMS Edition
The Caltech Alumni Association, in partnership with the APhMS department, is pleased to invite you to a Techer Talk where alumni will discuss their experiences, expertise, career trajectories, and overall general advice on how to navigate life after Caltech. Panelists include:
Assistant Professor Andrei Faraon, Applied Physics and Materials Science, Caltech (Caltech BS in Physics 2004)
- Caltech Assistant Professor Andrei Faraon develops nano-photonic quantum technologies for devices that operate close to the fundamental limit of light-matter interaction. Quantum photonics applications include on-chip optical quantum memories, single optically-addressable quantum bits, quantum conversion of photons in different bands of the electromagnetic spectrum. Prior to joining Caltech faculty, Asst. Prof. Faraon was a postdoctoral fellow at HP laboratories.
Dr. Doug Hofmann, Materials Scientist and Metallurgist, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Founder and President of Metallic Glass Consulting, LLC (Caltech PhD in Materials Science, 2008)
- Dr. Doug Hofmann is a Technologist and Co-founder of the Materials Development and Manufacturing Technology Group at NASA JPL, and is founder of the JPL Metallurgy Lab. He is also a Visiting Associate and Lecturer in Applied Physics and Materials Science at Caltech. He has also founded Metallic Glass Consulting, and a Caltech technology startup, Amorphology. His research focuses on metal manufacturing with emphasis on bulk metallic glasses and additive manufacturing. Dr. Hofmann was awarded the 2012 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers from President Obama for his work in metallic glass metal matrix composites.
Dr. Auna Moser, Scientist, General Atomics (Caltech PhD in Applied Physics, 2012)
- Dr. Auna Moser is a physicist at General Atomics working on the DIII-D tokamak, a Department of Energy-funded National Fusion Research Facility in San Diego, CA. She did her postdoctoral work at Los Alamos National Laboratory before joining the DIII-D Boundary and Plasma-Material Interaction Center as research staff in 2014.
Dr. Eric Ostby, Project Manager, Quantum Computing, Google (Caltech PhD in Electrical Engineering, 2009)
- Dr. Eric Ostby is a product manager on Google's Quantum Computing team. Previously, Eric led strategy and business development at Ingram Micro, was a manager at the Boston Consulting Group, and an engineer at Raytheon.
The panel will be moderated by Professor Kerry Vahala, the Ted and Ginger Jenkins Professor of Information Science and Technology and Professor of Applied Physics, Caltech. All students and alumni are welcome to attend, and refreshments will follow immediately after the panel discussion.
