Caltech Athletic Director Search
To: The Campus Community
From: Kevin M. Gilmartin, Vice President and Faculty Dean of Student; Thomas F. Rosenbaum, President
We are pleased to announce the search for Caltech's next athletic director. This is a critical position at the Institute where we value athletics and recreation as significant aspects of a holistic student and community experience.
In advance of this search process, the Institute's existing Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation (APER) department has been retitled, as Athletics, Recreation, and Instruction (ARI). This new designation honors the program's stated comprehensive mission: "to encourage participation in a balanced program of individual and group activities through a variety of intercollegiate, physical education, club, intramural, and informal recreation activities intended to meet the needs of all members of the community."
The search process will reflect the full range of this community commitment, with the aim of ensuring both a robust intercollegiate athletics program for the long term and vibrant physical education and recreational opportunities for students, faculty, and staff. A joint faculty, staff, and student committee, chaired by Jennifer Jahner (Professor of English; Dean of Undergraduate Studies), and staffed by Kylene Barker (Director, Employment & Recruiting Services), will conduct a comprehensive national search.
Joining Jen and Kylene on this search committee are:
- Jonas Peters - Bren Professor of Chemistry; Director, Resnick Sustainability Institute
- Brian M. Stoltz - Victor and Elizabeth Atkins Professor of Chemistry; Investigator, Heritage Medical Research Institute; Chair, Athletics and Physical Education Committee
- Shayna Chabner - Chief Communications and External Relations Officer
- Ryan O'Connor - Assistant Vice President, Finance and Operations in Student Affairs
- Dennis Ko - Postdoctoral Scholar
- Emanuel Green - Graduate Student
- Sophia Elam - Undergraduate Student
This search committee will work collaboratively, and will value input from across the Caltech community, in order to make expeditious recommendations to Vice President Gilmartin.
To ensure that the search committee and ARI leadership receive broad community input, we have set up a confidential web-based community feedback form. Please support this recruitment process by letting us know what you value from our Athletics, Recreation, and Instruction programs: https://caltechforms.wufoo.com/forms/miao49p00ypbvr/
As the search processes unfolds, if you any questions about the interim operations of the ARI team, please contact either Diana Jergovic or Brian Stoltz.
