JPL Update

October 14, 2025

To: The Campus Community
From: Thomas F. Rosenbaum, Sonja and William Davidow Presidential Chair and Professor of Physics

This week, JPL notified all employees of plans to reduce the Lab's workforce and implement a restructuring of the organization. Approximately 550 employees received layoff notifications today.

These reductions, while difficult, are essential to securing JPL's future. Our deepest appreciation goes to all the Laboratory's employees, whose tireless efforts have vaulted JPL into a position of scientific and technological leadership. Campus and JPL are doing everything possible to support affected employees. I am also grateful for the Herculean efforts of Lab Director Dave Gallager and colleagues to stave off an even worse outcome in the current budget environment.

As we look ahead, Caltech continues to work closely with NASA and other government agencies in support of the nation's priorities. We remain confident in our ability to continue to deliver the high caliber work, expertise, and scientific and engineering talent for which Caltech and JPL are known.
